Gaels at the Midway Point: Where Do They Stand?

At the midpoint of the 2024-25 season, Queen's Women's Hockey have compiled a 4-10-0 record. Sitting seventh in the OUA East standings, the Gaels have navigated a challenging schedule and remain competitive in the conference.

Key performances from emerging contributors and veterans alike have fueled the season so far, and the Gaels will look to continue building in the second half.

A Look at the Gaels' Record:

The Gaels have been competitive all season, resulting in several close contests.

Their offence has been solid, ranking seventh in goals scored per game (2.14). The team's ability to generate scoring opportunities—averaging 31.6 shots per game—has kept opponents' busy on the defensive end.

Defining Moments of the Season:

The Gaels' early schedule included some narrow losses, including a 1-0 overtime defeat to Laurier and a 3-2 shootout loss to Carleton.

Queen's has also secured emphatic wins this year, including a 6-1 win over TMU and a 4-0 victory over Toronto, both games showcasing a balanced offensive attack and disciplined defensive effort. The 4-2 road victory against York to close out the first half also demonstrated the team's ability, with contributions from key players like Sophie Hudson (Chemical Engineering) and Carys Collie (Life Sciences).

Standout Performers This Season:

Leading the way offensively is Alyson Reeves (Commerce), whose five goals and nine points make Reeves the team's top scorer. Hudson has been a dynamic presence from the blue line, contributing eight points and playing crucial minutes.

Logan Biggs (Kinesiology) has emerged as a reliable scorer with a team-high six goals, while Mikayla Cranney (Arts & Science) has provided consistent play with nine points.

In net, Emma Tennant (Mechanical Engineering) has been a stabilizing force, posting a .928 save percentage and recording a shutout against Toronto. Tennant's ability to make key saves under pressure has helped keep the Gaels competitive all season. Alexis Jandciu (Arts & Science) has also impressed in net, offering depth between the pipes and showcasing poise during high-stakes moments.

Special Teams:

The Gaels' power play, converting at 15 per cent, ranks sixth in the OUA and has seen contributions from Hudson and Biggs. The team's ability to capitalize on power play opportunities has been pivotal in their victories, such as Biggs' contributions in the TMU win.

Looking Ahead:

The Gaels face a pivotal stretch of games to start the second half, including matchups against division rivals York and Nipissing.

Gaels on the Rise:

Queen's closed out the first half of the regular season with wins in three of their last six games, and points in four of them. With the team's ability to generate offence and the defence and Tennant's stability on the back end, the Gaels will look to have a strong second half of the season. Fans can look forward to an exciting second half as the Gaels aim to climb the standings and make their mark in the OUA.
