Gaels capture bronze medal at U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship; fifth consecutive medal at nationals

Queen's Women's Rugby is coming home from the U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship with some hardware.

The Gaels defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 29-22 in the bronze medal match on Sunday to earn medals at the national championship in Prince Edward Island. It's the fifth consecutive medal at the national championship for Queen's Women's Rugby.

It was a tight game throughout, tied 22-22 with less than four minutes to play when Rachel Cullum (Arts & Science) scored a highlight reel try to put Queen's up late, and the Gaels would hold on to finish on the podium. Cullum also earned Player of the Game for Queen's in the medal-earning win.

Mika Matsukubo (Health Sciences) opened the scoring for the Gaels Sunday with a highlight reel try just five minutes into the game, streaking down the right touchline 60 yards for a try.

The Gee-Gees would respond with a converted try just minutes later to take a 7-5 lead before Cullum put Queen's back on top with a try, converted by Lizzie Gibson (Arts & Science), in the 13th minute.

The Gee-Gees would respond to tie the game but Queen's took the half time lead when Elena Pinkerton (Kinesiology) scored in the 31st minute, putting the Gaels up 17-12.

Ottawa opened the second half with a try before Gibson scored a try this time to give the Gaels another lead, this time 22-17.

The Gee-Gees would even the score again before Cullum's late-game heroics to win the game for Queen's.

Gibson, Izzy Page (Arts & Science), and Siobhan Sheerin (Arts & Science) were named U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship Tournament All-Stars.
