Gaels Fall in Defensive Battle to Western Mustangs

The Queen's Gaels fought hard but ultimately dropped a tight 1-0 contest to the Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Centre. Despite a determined effort and significant offensive pressure, Queen's couldn't find a way to solve Western's goaltender, Sara Vaccari, who shut down multiple high-quality scoring chances throughout the game.

The Gaels came out with energy, showing increased intensity compared to Friday's loss against Windsor. Queen's generated early pressure in the offensive zone but struggled to capitalize, as Western's defense kept the front of the net clear. The Mustangs struck first at 6:52 in the opening frame when the Mustangs pounced on a loose puck to give Western a 1-0 lead. Queen's goaltender Emma Tennant (Mechanical Engineering) responded well, making crucial saves to keep the deficit manageable and displaying strong rebound control.

The second period opened with a brief 4-on-4 following penalties on both sides, but it quickly returned to even strength. Queen's penalty kill unit, anchored by Tennant and reinforced by strong defensive support, held Western at bay, effectively collapsing around the net to clear loose pucks. Tennant showcased sharp reflexes and excellent positioning, denying Western's attempts to extend their lead. Despite this defensive resilience, Queen's struggled to capitalize offensively, as too many shots from the blue line went directly into Vaccari's chest, limiting any chance for rebounds.

In the final frame, Queen's intensified their attack, peppering Vaccari with shots and sustaining pressure in the offensive zone. The Gaels' defense, led by Mikayla Cranney (Arts & Science) and Sarah Campbell (Commerce), controlled the puck well, setting up chances from the point. Tennant made a highlight-reel pad save early in the period, giving Queen's the confidence to keep pushing forward. With just minutes remaining, the Gaels pulled Tennant for an extra attacker, but despite their best efforts and several near-misses, Queen's couldn't find the back of the net.

Queen's now stands at 1-6 on the season and will look to regroup on the road. They return to action on Friday, November 8, as they travel to Toronto to face the Varsity Blues at 7:00 PM. Fans can stream the game live on OUA.tv.
