Carleton Edges Queen's in Shootout

Kingston, ON – The Queen's Gaels fell to the Carleton Ravens in a tightly contested 3-2 shootout loss at the Memorial Centre on Saturday afternoon. Despite controlling long stretches of play and outshooting the Ravens 36-30, the Gaels were unable to secure their third consecutive win, dropping to 3-7-1 on the season.

The game began with high energy from Queen's, whose aggressive forecheck dictated the pace early. Logan Biggs (Kinesiology) opened the scoring in the first period, tapping in a feed from Rebecca Thompson (Environmental Science) and Carys Collie (Life Sciences). Carleton responded shortly after, with Shae Laprade tying the game  by capitalizing on a rebound in tight.

Penalties loomed large for Queen's, and Carleton took advantage late in the first period. Payton Miller netted a power-play goal  to give the Ravens a 2-1 lead. Queen's wasted no time in equalizing, as Mikayla Cranney (Arts & Science) showcased speed and finesse on a breakaway, roofing a backhanded shot top-shelf to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the intermission.

The second period saw a back-and-forth battle, with both teams failing to capitalize on power-play opportunities. Despite several quality chances, including multiple drawn penalties, Queen's entered the third period still tied.

Queen's opened the final frame with a power-play opportunity but struggled to generate high-danger scoring chances. Defensive miscues and offside plays hampered the Gaels' offensive rhythm, while goaltender Emma Tennant (Mechanical Engineering) remained a stabilizing force, making crucial saves down the stretch. Tennant's heroics continued into the dying seconds of regulation, preserving the tie and forcing overtime.

Overtime provided little resolution, with both teams managing limited chances. The game advanced to a shootout, where Kelsey Dunn (Kinesiology) scored on a forehand-backhand move and Biggs added a five-hole tally. However, Carleton converted twice in sudden death to seal the victory.

Queen's went 0-for-6 on the power play and accrued 14 penalty minutes, factors the coaching staff should be aiming to address moving forward. Despite the loss, standout performances from Biggs, Cranney, and Tennant continue to highlight the team's potential.

The Gaels will return to action next Sunday, November 24th, when they host the Brock Badgers at the Memorial Centre. Puck drop is set for 5:30 p.m., and fans can catch all the action live on OUA.tv.
