(24/11/24) - Kingston, ON., The Queen's Gaels Women's Hockey team fall just short of a win after one goal loss to the Brock Badgers. The shutout loss brings the Gaels to a 3-9 season record and are 7th in the OUA East standings. Gaels goalie no. 1
Emma Tennant (Mechanical Engineering) kept the score to a one score loss by saving a total of 25 shots on net. The Gaels were offensively strong with 36 shots on net but were unable to capitalize on these attempts. The Gaels are no stranger to close-games as their past game came close to a win after an overtime shootout to the Carleton Ravens.
The Badgers win the opening puck drop and set the tone for the first period. A two man penalty is called on the Gaels after a head-contact penalty at 4:19 into the period, although their strong defense holds off the Badgers. Intense pressure on the Badgers makes for a successful pk-unit for the Gaels and the score stayed null. The Gaels collected a total of 12 minutes of penalty time throughout the game and held strong defending a one goal deficit. The Gaels cleared three power plays before the Badgers scored just after 10 minutes of the first. With thick traffic in front of Tennant making the puck hard to track, the puck shot just past the Gaels goalie and into the net. The first period marked the only goal of the game with the score of 1-0.
The second period saw a surge in offensive strategy from the Gaels as they out-shot the Badgers 15-6 compared to the first where the Badgers out-shot the Gaels 15-7. The Gaels applied strong pressure throughout the period and found their chances at net, although the score remained 1-0.
The third period saw the Gaels out-shoot the Badgers yet again by 14-5. The Gaels just could not find the back of the net in a frustrating final period. The Gaels put out their strongest effort which was noticeable through great defensive pressure, as well as strong puck handling and forechecking. The Gaels collected two penalties in the third period. The Badgers were persistent in the Gaels zone although could not capitalize on their opportunities. Tennant kept the game 1-0 with a strong performance all evening, but sadly the Gaels could not find their groove in front of the net with a total of 36 shots on net yet unable to score.
