Gaels Falter in 4-2 Battle with Lancers, Power-Play Goals Not Enough

Kingston, ON – The Queen's Gaels Women's Hockey Team dropped a challenging game to the Windsor Lancers, 4-2, on Friday night at the Memorial Centre. Despite bursts of offensive pressure and a pair of power-play goals from forward Logan Biggs (Kinesiology), untimely defensive lapses and costly penalties hindered the Gaels' efforts.

The Lancers jumped out to an early lead midway through the first period after an unfortunate misplay in front of the Gaels' net, resulting in a goal for Windsor's Elissa Benjamin. Gaels goaltender Alexis Jandciu showed resilience, making two crucial saves to keep the score close, but Queen's struggled to establish a clean breakout from the defensive zone.

Queen's offense responded in the second period, capitalizing on a power-play opportunity. Biggs found the net with a determined effort, slipping a shot past the Windsor goaltender after an initial save to tie the game at 1-1. However, the Gaels' momentum was short-lived as they were whistled for multiple penalties, including multiple too-many-men calls that disrupted their rhythm. Windsor reclaimed the lead on the power play, with Benjamin striking again to make it 2-1.

The Gaels' persistence paid off just 27 seconds into the third period when Biggs redirected a point shot from Mikayla Cranney (Arts & Science) and Kelsey Dunn (Kinesiology) to tie the game at 2-2. Queen's showed urgency in the offensive zone, testing Windsor's defense repeatedly. Yet, another defensive breakdown allowed Windsor's Jaden Cherry to score at 4:38, putting the Lancers ahead once more. Queen's pushed hard in the closing minutes, but an empty-net goal by Maggi DeWolf-Russ sealed the 4-2 result for Windsor.

The Gaels, now 1-5 on the season and 0-4 at home, face a quick turnaround as they take on the Western Mustangs Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Centre. Fans can catch the game live on OUA.tv.
