Queen's Men's Soccer Fall to Nipissing 1-0 in Fierce Match

(06/10/24) - Kingston, ON.  In a fierce yet frustrating match Sunday afternoon, the Queen's Men's Soccer team falls to the Nipissing Lakers in a 1-0 loss.  The Gaels fought a brutal battle against their opponents, yet saw their defeat with a penalty kick in the second half of the match.

The match began with both teams unable to find the back of the net, though the Lakers able to attempt four shots on goal.  With smart reactions, Gaels goaltender, no. 22 Connor Adams (Arts and Sciences) was able to keep the score nil and the Lakers off the scoreboard.

Striving to give the Gaels the lead, forward, no. 29 George Papadopoulos (Arts and Sciences) finds space to kick a shot on goal, but unfortunately for the rookie is saved by Lakers goaltender Dante Emmanuel.

The Gaels return to the field with a fire in their play, though cannot overcome their struggle to make chances for themselves in front of the net.  With both teams heavily attacking for ball control, the tension began to build and a penalty kick is granted to the Lakers.  Although Adams was close, Lakers no. 2 Julian Srock was able to get past his reach and find the back of the net in the 73rd minute of the match.

With the Lakers now holding a 1-0 lead over the Gaels, the boys turned this frustration into energy and maintained control on Lakers territory, though the Lakers held strong defensively making scoring chances limited.

Chaos arose in the last 13 minutes of regulation time when a total of two red cards and five yellow cards were given out to players on both sides of the field, exemplifying the agitation of the match felt by the whole of Richardson Stadium.

The game came to a close after six minutes of additional play, and the Lakers leave Kingston with a win added to their season record which is now 6-2-2, boosting them to third above the UofT Varsity Blues.  With this loss, the Gaels can still to maintain their position of seventh in OUA East Standings.  The Gaels record is now 2-6-3.

Catch the Gaels back in action at Richardson Stadium against the Trent Excalibur, Saturday, October 12, at 3:15PM.  Trent currently holds the record of 2-7 and are eighth in OUA East standings.
