Queen's Women's Hockey defeated the York Lions 4-1 Saturday at the Memorial Centre.
Before the game, the Gaels honoured long-time Head Coach Matt Holmberg, who is now Director, Service Strategy & External Relations, with Queen's Athletics & Recreation, and his family. Holmberg served as head coach of Queen's Women's Hockey for 14 seasons from 2008-09 to 2022-23 and led the team to conference championships in the 2010-11 and 2012-13 seasons.
The Gaels opened the game up with a goal just five minutes into the game by Alyson Reeves. The second period was even more exciting, with a goal from Mikayla Cranney halfway into the period, and a second goal for Alyson Reeves in the last three minutes, putting the Gaels ahead 3-0.
Six minutes into the third period, Logan Biggs put one in the back of York's net, giving Queen's a 4-0 lead. With ten minutes left in the game, York scored a goal, ending with a final score of 4-1 for the Gaels.Â
With this win, the Gaels' overall standing will rise to 10-10-0, and the women will be back in action on Sunday, January 21st, where they play the York Lions once again.
