KINGSTON, Ont. (Jan. 19, 2024) – Queen's Men's Hockey defenceman
Jakob Brahaney was honoured as this season's recipient of the Murray Douglas Scholarship ahead of the Gaels' 3-0 win against the Toronto Varsity Blues Friday night at the Memorial Centre.
Murray Douglas (B.Comm. 1972) and Donna Douglas (Arts 1973) established the scholarship to recognize the academic and athletic excellence of a varsity hockey player at Queen's University. Murray played varsity hockey for the Gaels from 1968 to 1972 and continues to be one of the Gaels most active alumni, making significant contributions to the program year after year.
His continued interest in Queen's Hockey stems not only from his playing days but largely due to the work of Dave Descent, the former Gael Force president, who acted as the varsity hockey manager during Murray's days at Queen's.
The scholarship is designed to recognize excellence in both athletics and academics, as well to recognize an individual who leads by example and is looked up to by his teammates.
Brahaney (Hastings, Ont.) is in his third season with the Gaels and has been a key contributor to the team since the 2021-22 season, when Queen's finished with an historic 17-1-1 record in the regular season. A Kingston Frontenacs alum, Brahaney is an assistant captain with the Gaels this year, and has seven assists through 17 games, tying his career high with the Tricolour.
