Queen's Football 2023 Season Preview

Queen’s Football will be looking to make their third straight appearance in the Yates Cup in 2023, after having advanced to the OUA Championship Game the previous two seasons.

Queen’s Football finished the 2022 season with an impressive 7-1 record and the No. 3 national ranking in the U SPORTS Top 10 after the regular season. Queen’s advanced to the 114th Yates Cup after big playoff wins over the Toronto Varsity Blues, in their Homecoming Game, and the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Richardson Stadium, before ultimately falling to the Mustangs in the Yates Cup.

A number of Queen’s Football players were recognized with post-season honours, including returnees defensive lineman Silas Hubert, defensive back Ashton Miller-Melancon, and kicker Tyler Mullan, who were named U SPORTS First Team All-Canadians, and offensive lineman Evan Floren and defensive lineman Darien Newell, who were named Second-Team All-Canadians. Hubert was also named the OUA Lineman of the Year.

Running back Anthony Soles, who tied Queen’s Football’s season-game record for touchdowns with four in the team’s 62-11 win over the Guelph Gryphons, and now sits tied for seventh in Queen’s Football’s single-season touchdowns list with 11, also returns.

Queen's will open their 2023 OUA regular season schedule at home, taking on the Laurier Golden Hawks at Richardson Stadium. The team prepared for the season with a 33-10 victory over the McGill Redbirds on Friday, Aug. 18.

Queen's will also open the Lang Pavilion at Richardson Stadium for the 2023 season.

Along with the Golden Hawks, Queen's Football will host the Mustangs, Carleton Ravens, and Gee-Gees, and will visit the Varsity Blues, Windsor Lancers, York Lions, and Gryphons in 2023.

"This year's schedule is a reminder of the depth of the OUA conference," said Queen's Football Head Coach Steve Snyder. "Each week will be a challenge as we prepare for difficult road trips, hostile environments, and strong opponents.

“We are always going to be excited to play at Richardson Stadium. This year will be very special with the opening of the pavilion. We believe the new feel at Richardson Stadium is something football fans across the province should come experience.”

“We are all very excited for the season. I think training camp has been moving smoothly. We still have a lot of work to do, but I trust that the program is moving in the right direction and we’re all staying very focused and making sure we’re building each other up better and better.” – Eric Colonna, defensive back, No. 21.

“Super excited to start the year. For our team, we’ve had a lot of success but always came short of our ultimate goal. This year is really the year where we want to put it all together and learn from our past. I’m super excited to see that happen. – Nico Kwemo, receiver, No. 13.

“I can tell on everyone’s face, everyone wants the season to start. We’re really excited to get out there. – Darien Newell, defensive lineman, No. 90.
