Khaira, Newell, Vanek selected to 2023 U SPORTS East-West Bowl roster

KINGSTON, Ont. (April 17, 2023) – Three Queen's Football players have been selected to participate in the 2023 U SPORTS East-West Bowl.

Offensive lineman Jas Khaira, defensive tackle Darien Newell, and defensive back Keegan Vanek were all named to the roster for the annual top prospect showcase, announced by U SPORTS on Monday.

The East-West Bowl will return to McMaster University for the 19th edition of the event, on Saturday, May 13 at Ron Joyce Stadium.

The roster recognitions celebrate the next generation of top Canadian football prospects. 90 of the top Canadian university players eligible for the 2024 CFL Draft will participate in the event in front of coaches, general managers, and personnel from the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Khaira (Brampton, Ont.) is part of an offensive line that helped Queen's Football finish second in the OUA in rushing last season, at 239.3 yards per game, and fourth in the conference in passing, at 227.3 yards per game.

Newell (Brampton, Ont.) finished last year with 18 tackles, four sacks, and 6.5 tackles for a loss in the regular season. He added eight tackles in the OUA Playoffs, helping lead Queen's Football to the Yates Cup for the second straight season.

Vanek (London, Ont.) recorded 13 tackles, 1.5 tackles for a loss, and one interception in six regular season games last year. He added eight tackles in Queen's Football's post-season run to the Yates Cup.

Also a kick returner for Queen's, Vanek finished last year with 286 yards on 13 kickoff returns and 65 yards on eight punt returns in the regular season and playoffs combined.
