Queen's Figure Skating competed in the OUA Figure Skating Championship, hosted by Western this week, with excitement and anticipation of personal best performances. While many skaters saw improvements in scores from the two earlier invitational competitions, the team placed sixth overall amidst a strong field of 10 teams at the Championship.
After the first day of competition, the team stood in sixth place, just missing the podium in four events: Star 8/9 Similar Dance (
Emily Howard and
Isabelle Pawlowski), Star 10 Solo Dance (
Valerie So), Gold Solo Dance (
Shaundra Buelow), and Star 10 Free Skate (
Holly Quinn).
On the second day of competition, the Gaels had podium finishes with a silver medal for
Zander Neilsen, who skated to a near flawless program in Open Men's Free Skate, and bronze medals for Buelow and
Jade Paganelli, who impressed the judges with their technique, flow, and expression in the Pasodoble and the Viennese Waltz in Star 10 Similar Dance.
Queen's also won the Team Spirit Award that was voted on by all the varsity teams.
