Duhart’s hat trick leads Gaels past Gee-Gees in home opener

KINGSTON, Ont. (Oct. 13, 2023) – Dalton Duhart scored three goals, including a highlight-reel game-winner midway through the third period, to help Queen's Men's Hockey edge the visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees 5-3 Friday night at the Memorial Centre.

After the Gee-Gees scored twice in the first period, a three-goal second period game Queen's the lead heading into the third. Ottawa would tied the game before Duhart (Grand Blanc, Mich.) beat Gee-Gees goalie Franky Lapenna on a breakaway after a nice chip pass from Nolan Hutcheson (Kingston, Ont.) to restore the Gaels' one-goal lead. The score would hold the rest of the period and the Gaels improved their record to 3-0-0 on the season with the win in their home opener.

Ottawa took an early lead with goals by Anthony Poulin and Bradley Chenier in the first period, with Poulin's goal coming on the power play.

Duhart's first goal of the game, assisted by Holden Katzalay (West Vancouver, B.C.) and Jonathan Yantsis (Markham, Ont.) on the power play early in the second period, cut Ottawa's lead to 2-1.

Alex Robert (Ottawa, Ont.) would tie the game with a goal, assisted by Trevor Longo (North Vancouver, B.C.) and Cameron Tolnai (Oakville, Ont.) five minutes later, and Owen Lalonde's power play marker, assisted by Duhart and Hayden Fowler (Kingston, Ont.) late in the second period gave the Gaels their first lead of the game.

Max Grondin evened the score for Ottawa early in the third period before Duhart sent the Gaels home with the win with his second of the game minutes later. Duhart added an empty netter with under a minute to play for the hat trick.
