Queen's Women's Hockey extend win streak with big win over Windsor

KINGSTON, Ont. (Jan. 27, 2023) - Queen's Women's Hockey defeated the Windsor Lancers 5-1 Friday night at the Memorial Centre to open their crucial home weekend slate of games and extend their win streak to three games.

The Gaels controlled play for most of the game and matched their season high offensive output with five goals.

Emma McKnight opened the scoring for Queen's with a highlight reel shorthanded goal midway through the first period. Killing a 5-on-3 power play, McKnight used her speed to split the Lancers' defence for a breakaway before deking Windsor's goalie and finding the back of the net to give the Gaels an early one-goal lead.

Six minutes later Scout Watkins Southward, in her first game back from helping Canada win gold at the FISU Games, scored on a deflected shot to give the Gaels a 2-0 lead. Alicia Juras and Quinn Johnston recorded assists on the goal.

The Lancers scored less than a minute later to cut Queen's lead in half but the Gaels took a one-goal lead into the first intermission.

Rebecca Thompson restored the Gaels' two-goal lead early in the second period on a goal assisted by Johnston and Sarah Campbell.

Queen's extended their lead early in the third period on the power play when Sophie Hudson completed a great passing play by the Gaels by finding the back of the net with a goal assisted by Alex Maw and Kelsey Dunn.

Then late in the third period Queen's scored another highlight reel goal, with Alyson Reeves deking the Windsor goalie for the Gaels' fifth goal of the game, assisted by Maddie Briggs.

Lexi Giorgi was solid in net for Queen's all game long, and finished with 29 saves in the win. The Gaels finished with 41 shots against Windsor.

With the win, Queen's improved their record to 4-7-6-4 and sit third in the OUA East Division standings.

The Gaels will close out their weekend homestand at the Memorial Centre Saturday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. against the Waterloo Warriors.
