The Queen's Gaels opened their first ever trip to the U SPORTS Men's Final 8 Basketball Championship with a 90-80 win over the Dalhousie Tigers Friday in Edmonton, Ont.
With the win, the Gaels advanced to the Championship Semifinals where they will take on the Saskatchewan Huskies, who upset the No. 1 seed Brock Badgers earlier in the day.
Five Gaels scored in double-digits in the win, led by
Quinton Gray (Richmond Hill, Ont.), who finished with a team-high 19 points. Gray, who was named Queen's Player of the Game, added four rebounds, three assists, and a steal in the win.
Cole Syllas (Kingston, Ont.) had 18 points in the win while
Connor Keefe (Halifax, N.S) added 15,
Isaac Krueger (Guelph, Ont.) finished with 12, and
Henry Van Herk (Toronto, Ont.) scored 11 points. Keefe finished with a double-double after also grabbing 10 rebounds.
Queen's controlled the glass in the win, out-rebounding the Tigers 48-23 with an impressive 19 rebounds coming on the offensive end. That led to 23 second chance points compared to just four for Dalhousie.
The Gaels were out-shot on the floor, 47.9 per cent to 50. 8 per cent, but held the edge from three-point range, finishing 42.9 per cent from beyond the arc compared to 30 per cent for Dalhousie.
Queen's will be back on the court Saturday at 8 p.m EST, taking on the Huskies with a spot in the U SPORTS Men's Final 8 Basketball Championship Gold Medal Game on the line.
