Fastpitch

Queen's Fastpitch was in Ottawa, Ont. over the weekend, sweeping their doubleheader against the Ottawa Gee-Gees before also earning two wins over the Carleton Ravens via forfeit.

The Gaels defeated Ottawa 17-10 in Game 1.

Four hits from Katie Morrison paved the way to victory for Queen's. Morrison singled in the second, tripled in the fourth, singled in the fifth, and singled in the seventh in the win.

The Gaels scored seven runs in the seventh inning. The big bats in the inning were led by singles by Sarah Van Den Heuvel, Ausha Guzzwell, and Regan Worsley, a triple by Abby Jacklin, and a fielder's choice by Morrison.

Queen's scattered 22 hits in the game with Morrison, Sydney Pendleton, Erika Degabriele, Kacey Doerfler, Worsley, Guzzwell, and Jacklin all recording multiple hits.

The Gaels defeated Ottawa 15-14 in Game 2.

Queen's took the game in dramatic fashion, with a walk-off victory over the Gee-Gees. The game was tied at 14 with the Gaels batting in the bottom of the eighth. International tie breaker rules started a runner, Abby Jacklin, on second base, when Sara Salvucci hit a double to drive Jacklin in for the winning run.

Prior to that in the bottom of the seventh inning, Queen's tied the game at 14 when Sarah Van Den Heuvel doubled on a 2-0 count, scoring three runs.

Sydney Pendleton and Sarah Van Den Heuvel had three RBIs each, while Katie Morrison had four RBIs.

Morgan Burley was credited with the victory for the Gaels after going three innings, allowing four runs on five hits, striking out three and walking one.

Queen's totaled 19 hits in the game. Van Den Heuvel, Guzzwell, and Pendleton each collected multiple hits while Erika Degabriele, Sara Salvucci, Abby Jacklin, and Katie Morrison each managed to go three for five.

The Gaels will host two doubleheaders two weekends from now to close out their regular season, taking on the Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday, Oct. 15 and the TMU Bold on Sunday, Oct. 16.

Sailing

Queen's Sailing Team

This past weekend, Queen's Sailing competed at the National Yacht Club in Toronto, Ont. in the annual University of Toronto Invitational Regatta. Leaving bright and early Saturday morning, the team was fired up and ready for some racing. Saturday consisted of relatively light wind racing, with A fleet's Thomas Elia and Valerie Louis pulling mid-fleet finishes, as well as a few second and third place finishes for most of the day. The competitive A Fleet had excellent racing, with Queen's, Laurier, McGill, and Concordia inches away from each other at the finish line.

Rookie skipper Luke Strickland and crew Jane Butler absolutely dominated B fleet, finishing the day with three first place finishes and not a race under second place. By the end of the day Saturday, Queen's was sitting in second place overall, three points behind McGill, who held first.

Sunday brought heavier winds, some freezing weather, and intense racing. 10 races later, Valerie and Thomas continued with mostly mid-fleet finishes and one second place finish while Luke and Jane finished the day with three more first place finishes and two second place finishes. After an awesome weekend of racing, Queen's ended the weekend in second place overall, just shy from McGill in first.

Baseball

Queen's Baseball split both doubleheaders they played over the weekend. On Saturday against the McGill Redbirds, the Gaels opened with a 3-1 win, with pitcher Jordan Leishman throwing a complete game, before a 9-7 loss.

On Sunday against the Concordia Stingers, Queen's opened with a 5-4 loss before concluding the weekend with a 13-1 win, with pitcher Adam Bernicky throwing five scoreless innings.

Queen's finished the regular season with a 10-4 record, the second best winning percentage in the league.

Men's Ultimate

Queen's Men's Ultimate

The Men's Ultimate team were in Belleville, Ont. this weekend taking part in the Canadian Eastern University Ultimate Championships (CEUUC).

Straight into the Round of 16, Queen's took down Algonquin 15-4, and made short of Western 15-4 in the quarter-finals. Back at it by Sunday morning, Queen's led start to finish against Ottawa, taking the game 9-7 and sending Queen's to the final.

In a rematch from the previous weekend, Queen's saw Waterloo and had their foot on the gas early with three breaks and an 8-6 lead at half time. Waterloo came out swinging in the second half, closing it to 8-8, but the Gaels responded in kind with three unanswered points to close out the game 11-8 and take their second tournament win of the season.

Tremendous play on both sides of the disc from Jaden Belliveau on Saturday, followed by grinding unstoppable defence from Connor Legg and Adam Wolpert on Sunday. Eli Shapera and Tyler Gunasekera rose to the occasion in the final and proved to be the difference makers in key moments.

The Men's team are in action next in Brampton, Ont. from Oct. 15-16 for the National Championships, while nine current or former Gaels (Will Dickson, Ian McClean, Tyler Gunasekera, Taige Tomlinson, Dax Miller, Tristan Galipeau, Declan Gainer, Wilkie Lewis, Eli Park) and the Gaels Head Coach (Pete Galbraith) have been invited to Team Canada U24 tryouts on Oct. 8-9 in Ottawa, Ont.

Women's Ultimate

Queen's Women's Ultimate finished with a 4-2 record at the Canadian Eastern University Ultimate Championships (CEUUC) in Belleville, Ont. this past weekend.

On Saturday, the Gaels defeated the Western Mustangs 10-4 and Laurier Golden Hawks 15-2, sandwiching a tight 12-10 loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees.

On Sunday, Queen's opened with a close 10-9 loss to the McGill Martlets before rebounding with two wins, 14-1 over the TMU Bold and 10-9 over the Gee-Gees in a rematch of their lone loss on Saturday.

The team will be heading to the Friday Qualifier on Oct. 14 ahead of Nationals, hoping to secure a bid into Division 1 of Nationals.

Men's Lacrosse

The Queen's Men's Lacrosse team went 1-1 over the weekend, first dropping their game against McGill Friday by a score of 12-5. They followed that up with a road win against Nipissing, winning by a score of 11-6.

Field Hockey

Queen's Field Hockey took on the York Lions in a home-and-home series over the weekend. On Friday, York was able to capitalize on a field goal in the last minute of play in the first quarter. York also converted twice more on a short corner and field goal in the second and third quarter respectively. The Gaels were able to hold off the Lions, keeping an even score in the final quarter, to maintain a final score of 3-0.

Queen's had a strong start at York on Sunday and trailed by one-goal at half time. Unfortunately, a peppering of shots led to a final score of 6-0 for the Lions.

The Gaels will reset as they take on McGill on Saturday, Oct. 8 with a doubleheader at Tindall Field.
