Queen's Women Water Polo won the National Collegiate Water Polo (NCWP) silver medal Sunday at ARC Pool. This is the second consecutive year the Gaels competed in the championship match.
The weekend started with a 13-10 win over McGill in the semifinals on Saturday to set up a rematch of the 2023 final against the Toronto Varsity Blues. Leading scorers were captain Ally Rowe with four, Ry Kay with three, and Arianna Wilson McDermid with two. The league teams 2 through 6 are very equally matched so getting to our league championship is almost as big a step as beating the nine-time defending champions from Toronto.
In the Sunday final, the Gaels came out flying with a big steal on the first Toronto possession, Â a fast counter and score to take the lead, then another steal. But it got physical, fast, and the Varsity Blues put up a quick five goals to take control. Final score was Toronto 21-2. Scorers were Ally Rowe and Ry Kay.
Queen's Men's Water Polo suffered a tough setback on Friday, losing their quarterfinal match 13-9 to McMaster. That set up a playoff for 5th spot with the Ottawa Gee Gees and McGill, who also lost quarterfinals. Both Ottawa (2nd in 2023) and Queen's (3rd last year) dropped out of contention early. Saturday's 12-9 loss to Gee Gees didn't show any quit and they had a rebound 10-8 win over McGill Saturday night. The sixth place finish had a strong finish to set up off season focus.
Scoring for the men on the weekend were George Huang with eight, Caiomyn Fitzgerald with five, Kristijan Markovski and Stefan Groza with four each, Matt LaRoux with three, and Jake Kost and Lazar Paroski with two each.
