Queen's alumna Julie-Anne Staehli competes in women's 5,000 metre event at Tokyo Olympics

Queen's University alumna and former Gaels student-athlete Julie-Anne Staehli finished the women's 5,000 metres event at the Tokyo Olympics with a time of 15:33.39.

Staehli (Lucknow, Ont.) finished 17th in her heat. She was 45 seconds behind Heat 1 winner Sifan Hassan (14:14.89) from the Netherlands, and 34 seconds behind the final qualifier for the final, fellow Canadian Andrea Seccafien (14:59.55).

The women's 5,000 metres final is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 2.

Staehli was a member of the Gaels Cross Country team from the 2012-13 season to the 2016-17 season and was named a U SPORTS All-Canadian all five seasons, becoming the first Queen's athlete to achieve the accomplishment. Staehli was also a five-time OUA All-Star.

Staehli was awarded the PHE '55 Alumnae Award as the Varsity Team Female Athlete of the Year in her final season in 2016-17. She was also named an Alfie Pierce Trophy recipient as a Varsity Team Rookie of the Year in her first season at Queen's in 2012-13.

Throughout her athletic career at Queen's, Staehli helped the Gaels win a national team silver medal and two national team bronze medals, as well as team silver and bronze medals at the OUA level. Staehli was also named the 2013 U SPORTS MVP after capturing the individual gold medal that year and has a national silver medal as well. At the OUA level, Staehli claimed two silver and two bronze medals.
