Queen's Women's Rugby advance to U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship Final

Siobhan Sheerin scored two tries in extra time to help propel the Queen's Gaels past the Laval Rouge et Or and into the Final at the U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship.

Queen's defeated the Rouge et Or, who beat the Gaels in the 2019 U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship, 28-18 in their semifinal match at Nixon Field on Friday night. The Gaels will meet the Ottawa Gee-Gees, who defeated the Victoria Vikes 17-14 in extra time in the other semifinal match earlier Friday, on Sunday in the national championship game.

After Nele Pien opened the scoring for Laval with a try, the two teams traded penalty converts and Carmen Izyk (Blackie, Alta.) recorded a try for the Gaels to even the score 10-10 at half time.

The teams traded penalty converts in the second half as well before Sheerin (Toronto, Ont.) scored two tries in the first overtime period to give the Gaels a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Sheerin, who was named Queen's Player of the Game in the win, said after the game the team knew they had to work hard in the closing minutes to get the result they needed.

"Our team just knew that we had to play with grit and energy. That's something that we talked about before this game. We knew this was the time to really push it."

Queen's now has the chance to be crowned national champions when they take on the Gee-Gees Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Nixon Field.

"It feels amazing," said Sheerin. "We worked so hard for this and it's something that we've been pushing. Even when COVID hit we knew we had an end goal, and this is one step closer to it."

"We knew that it wasn't about minutes 0-40, it was about minutes 41-80," said Head Coach Dan Valley after the game. "I didn't know we were going to go to minutes 81-100 to get the job done. Just a gritty performance from our squad all around. That was a super fun thing to be a part of tonight."
