Four straight aces from van der linde send Gaels to 3-1 win over No.10 Warriors

KINGSTON, Ont. (February 14, 2020) - The Queen's Gaels (11-6) pulled off a 3-1 upset of the No.10 nationally-ranked Waterloo Warriors (10-6) on Friday night at the Queen's ARC.

GAME FLOW
Arielle Palermo quickly kicked things in to motion this Valentine's Day match, with a breezy ace off the Gaels inaugural serve.  The Gaels did face some organizational hurdles the first set. With the Warriors gaining several points off wrong-timed defence by the Gaels, Queen's chased the Warriors two point lead a majority of the set. However, a kill by Teah Cook, set up by a block by Saffron van der Linde, gave the Gaels the lead mid-set. Waterloo retaliated and tied up the set at 25-25. A point-for-point rally ensued, the Gaels came out on top 28-26.

The Tricolour extinguished their slow start in the second set. Tips at the net from van der Linde gave the Gaels the momentum they needed to dominate the offence. Van der Linde walked off the court with a match total of seven kills and three digs. Another plus twenty-five set ensued, but the Gaels offensive strategy granted the lead and the set 30-28.

Long rallies characterized the third set; with both the Gaels and the Warriors not relinquishing their effort of offence. Palermo smashed kills on the Warriors side of the net, but the Gaels are unable to break through the Waterloo defence. The Warriors held onto the third set 25-22, pushing the match in a fourth set.

The Gaels led the majority of the fourth set by a five-point margin. Regardless of the Gaels substantial lead, van der Linde stole the final set, completing four serving aces in a row to close things out and land the match point.
