GAMES OF THE WEEK
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: No.7 nationally ranked Gaels open 2020 at home Saturday

The No.7 Gaels (7-4) return to the Queen's ARC this Saturday as they welcome the Algoma Thunderbirds (2-9) on Saturday night with tip-off set for 6 pm.

Queen's closed out 2019 with a win over the newest member of the OUA Ontario Tech back on November 29 in a 76-47 decision. Emma Ritcey paced the Gaels with 17 points while adding four rebounds and shooting 5-6 from beyond the arc. Ritcey lead the OUA in three-point field goal percentage with a 48.3% mark on the season and sits third in overall shooting percentage at 50.5%.

Algoma is coming off their second win of the season as they defeated Waterloo on November 30 70-58. Algoma has now won two of their last five contests with their other victory being a massive overtime upset of the nationally-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees 66-65 in Sault Ste. Marie.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Gaels look for fifth straight win against Algoma
Queen's (7-4) closed out 2019 with a four-game winning streak and will look to make it five on Saturday night when they host the Algoma Thunderbirds (2-9) at the Queen's ARC with tip-off set for 8 pm.

The Gaels rattled off late November wins over Windsor, Toronto, Ryerson and Ontario Tech with the latter three all coming in Kingston. The Gaels victory over Ryerson marked their first win over the Toronto school since 2010 ending a 20 game Rams winning streak over the Tricolour. The dynamic play of rookie Kingston brothers Luka and Cole Syllas have helped the Gaels jump out to a 7-4 record so far. Cole sits fifth in the OUA in defensive rebounds with 74 and is also 27th in points per game with 14.4 while Luca is 19th OUA in assists with 31.

The Thunderbirds are losers of three straight to close out 2019 but have picked up a pair of wins this season defeating both Windsor and York. Algoma has defeated Queen's twice since entering the OUA but Queen's has won the previous three contests dating back to 2016.

MEN'S HOCKEY: Queen's Cup rematch kicks off tough three-game week for Gaels
A special Wednesday night matchup at the Guelph Gryphons (10-4-4) kicks off 2020 for the Queen's Gaels (7-9-1) in a rematch of the 2019 Queen's Cup championship with puck-drop set for 7:30 pm. Queen's will then return home on Friday night at 7:30 pm to challenge the No.6 nationally ranked Carleton Ravens (16-3-1) before heading out to North Bay to visit the Nipissing Lakers (7-10-3) on Sunday evening at 6 pm.

The Gaels closed out 2019 with a home shutout victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs on November 30 with a 4-0 shutout victory. Both Eric Margo and Mason Kohn each had a pair of points while goaltender Luke Richardson stopped all 22 shots faced for the shutout. With three shutouts on the season, Richardson is now tied for first in the OUA and his 2.45 GAA is second-best among rookie goaltenders this season in the conference.

The Gaels bested Guelph in last year's OUA Queen's Cup final by the tune of 4-1 in front of a sold-out crowd of 2,800 fans at the Memorial Centre. For the Gaels, it was their first Queen's Cup title since 1981. This season Guelph has put together another strong season currently sitting fourth in the OUA West with Mikkel Aagaard leading the team in points at 27, third-best in the OUA. The Ravens have an OUA best 33 points this season but are coming off a 3-0 loss to McGill last weekend. Nipissing sits two points ahead of Queen's in the standings but the Gaels have three games in hand on the Lakers.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY: Gaels head to London to begin tough road swing
The Gaels (8-5-1-1) will look to pick up a pair of key road victories as they travel to London on Friday to visit the Western Mustangs (6-5-2-0) and Guelph on Saturday to challenge the defending national champion Gryphons (7-4-1-2). Friday night's matchup is set for a 7 pm start time while the Gaels then face a quick turnaround with a 2 pm afternoon affair at Guelph.

The Gaels started their 2020 portion of the OUA season with a pair of home matchups last weekend picking up a point in an overtime loss to Laurentian but finishing the weekend off strong with an upset of the nationally-ranked Nipissing Lakers 2-1. Alex Maw had a strong start to 2020 as she opened the scoring against Laurentian tallying a power-play goal and then against the nationally-ranked Lakers, it was Maw who struck with a deflected shot to put the Gaels up 2-0. The goal held up as the game-winner for Queen's.

The Mustangs have struggled so far this season as they currently sit in 9th place in the OUA standings just outside of a playoff position. They are coming off an overtime win over Laurier last weekend and will also face Ontario Tech on Saturday. The Gryphons sit just one point ahead of the Gaels in the OUA standings but have posted three straight wins including a pair of back-to-back shutouts in their last two contests.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Gaels return to the court for first time in 2020, challenge pair of 1-7 teams
The Queen's Gaels (5-3) are back in action for the first time since November 23 as they travel to take on the Trent Excalibur (1-7) on Friday night at 5 pm. Queen's will then return home to the ARC on Sunday afternoon at 1 pm as they welcome their cross-town rivals the RMC Paladins (1-7).

Queen's has won three straight matches dating back to November 10 with wins over Trent, RMC and Lakehead. Both matches against Trent and RMC saw the Gaels win in straight sets and they will hope for the same as they look to sweep the season series for each. The Gaels have had a strong serving game so far this season and have been led by the duo of Arielle Palermo and Julia Wiercigroch who rank one-two in the OUA in aces per set at 0.89 and 0.67 respectively.

Both Trent and RMC each sit with 1-7 records so far this season, with Trent picking up their lone win over Lakehead and RMC defeating Trent. The Excalibur are losers of seven straight while the Paladins have lost their last four contests.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: No.8 nationally ranked Gaels ready to move up OUA East standings
The No.8 Queen's Gaels (4-3) start their 2020 season with a pair of matches first visiting Trent (0-7) on Friday at 7 pm before returning home Sunday to battle rivals RMC (1-7) at the ARC with a 1 pm start time.

Queen's closed out 2019 with two straight wins defeating the same teams they are set to challenge to begin 2020. The Gaels hosted Trent and won 3-0 and visited RMC on November 21 picking up a 3-1 victory. Despite the long break between action, the Tricolour have kept themselves busy hosting the Canadian National Excellence program in a school day game in November and challenging non-conference opponent Laval in a pair of matches this past weekend with Queen's coming out on top in each.

It has been a tough season so far for both Trent and RMC as they have just one win between the two programs. The lone victory for RMC came at the hands of Trent in a 3-2 home win. Trent has never beaten the Gaels since joining the OUA.
