No.7 Gaels drop 76-71 decision at McMaster

HAMILTON (January 24, 2020) - The No. 7 nationally-ranked Queen's Women's Basketball team (9-6) faced a tough loss against the McMaster Marauders (8-7) with a score of 76-71 on Friday night.

GAME FLOW
Coming off of a huge OT winner last weekend, the Gaels came out hot with Julia Chadwick scoring her first two of 12 points on the night. The quarter continued with Queen's extending their lead over the Marauders to nine points. With two minutes left in the first McMaster was able to score eight points to bring them to within just one point of the Gaels. Moving into the second quarter the score was close, with the Gaels leading 18-17.

The beginning of the second quarter saw a back-and-forth matchup with both teams executing offensively. The Gaels Michelle Istead had a hot hand, putting up four points in the frame. The Marauders kept the game close until the final four minutes of the half when they went on a 12 point streak, leaving Queen's 11 points behind the lead.

Sophie de Goede began the third frame getting to the foul line and shooting for two. This early success would be short lived as from there on McMaster would take control of the quarter. Christina Buttenham of the Marauders would continue to extend their lead to 15 over the Gaels after she made back-to-back layups. Buttenham was the driver of McMaster's offensive success with 12 points and three rebounds in the frame. The score was 62-48 for the home team as they moved into the fourth quarter.

Myriam Fontaine lead the way for the Gaels in the fourth quarter putting up seven points in the first six minutes to inch closer to regaining the lead. The Gaels were able to gain momentum after McMaster ran into foul trouble with eight fouls resulting in points for Queen's. This was not enough for the Gaels to take back the lead and the game finished with McMaster defeating Queen's 76-71.
