No.6 Gaels fall to No.9 Badgers in battle of nationally-ranked teams

ST. CATHERINES, Ont. (January 25, 2020) - The No. 7 nationally-ranked Queen's Women's Basketball team (9-7) were defeated by the Brock Badgers (13-3) with a score of 81-64 on Saturday night.

GAME FLOW
Both the Gaels and the Badgers kicked off the first quarter shooting for three and pairing that with a jump shot. The remainder of the quarter saw the lead change seven times as both teams capitalized offensively. In the last minute of the frame Jess Morris and Melissa Tatti of Brock both dropped 3-point shots which put them in the lead. Moving into the second frame, the Gaels trailed the Badgers 27-21.

Michelle Istead started off the second quarter with a jump shot to bring the Gaels within four points of Brock. From here until the final five minutes of the half both teams went scoreless. Isabella Belvedere made two back-to-back 3-point shots with a minute left but this was not enough to take over the lead. Moving into the second half the Badgers remained in the lead with a score of 44-36.

For most of the second half Queen's remained within 10 points of Brock. The Gaels ran into trouble executing on offence which was the key difference. Brock was able to capitalize on their free throw opportunities shooting 72.2% compared to Queen's 38.5%. The Gaels were unable to make up the deficit throughout the second half, thus the Badgers defeated Queen's with a score of 81-64.

Emma Weltz led the way for the Gaels as she put up 13 points, four assists and two rebounds. The Badgers were led by Melissa Tatti who had 30 points, six steals and three rebounds. The Gaels shot 11 from 44 on 3-point shots compared to Brock's 12 from 33.
