No.7 Gaels fall to No.3 Gee-Gees in battle of Top 10 teams

OTTAWA (January 17, 2020) - The No. 7 nationally-ranked Queen's Women's Basketball team (8-5) fell to the No. 3 nationally-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gee's (12-2) with a score of 81-71 on Friday night in Ottawa.

GAME FLOW
In a fast paced start, the Gaels struggled to gain any momentum, turning the ball over twice in the first minute of the game. Ottawa's Brigitte Lefebvre scored her first four of 17 points of the night, which gave the Gee-Gee's the lead early on. Queen's began to find their stride after Ottawa ran into foul trouble, keeping the Gaels within six points of the Gee-Gee's. The first quarter finished with Queen's trailing the Gee-Gee's with a score of 22-17.

The Gaels were off to a slow start in the second with Ottawa expanding their lead to nine points. Queen's struggled to find their offensive rhythm with the Gee-Gee's still leading with a score of 42-35 after two quarters of play. The Gaels were lead in the first half by Emma Ritcey who scored eight points and also collected a rebound.

The third quarter saw the Gaels bring themselves within two points of the Gee-Gee's after Sophie de Goede was able to score nine points in the first five minutes of the second half. Immediately following de Goede's offensive success, Ottawa went on a run to score eleven consecutive points, stretching their lead to 61-48. With just two minutes left in the third frame, the Gaels responded with Laura Donovan and Myriam Fontaine scoring points but it was not enough to close the gap. Moving into the fourth quarter, after Queen's narrowed the Gee-Gee's lead to only ten points, the score was 66-55.

For the bulk of the first half of the fourth quarter, the Gaels and Ottawa were each holding their own defensively with the Gaels only scoring two points and keeping the Gee-Gee's to just nine points. Ottawa would stretch their lead out to as many as 21 points, but the Gaels worked quickly, scoring 10 points which cut the lead back down to 10. The Gee-Gee's were able to hold onto their lead to defeat Queen's with a score of 81-71.
