OTTAWA, Ont. (January 18, 2020) - The Queen's Gaels women's basketball team (9-5) upset the No. 4 Carleton Ravens (12-3) with a 80-75 overtime victory on Saturday night in Ottawa.
GAME FLOW
The Gaels started slow, letting Carleton take the lead by six points in the first five minutes of the game. Isabella Belvedere was able to kickstart Queen's offence as she made her first of three pointer of the night. The Gaels continued to make up their deficit with a full bench rotation as all team members contributed to get points on the board. Carleton's Alyssa Cerino led the Ravens with seven points in the opening quarter as the Ravens held a narrow 21-19 lead over the Gaels.
The second quarter saw a better start from Queen's as they were able to tie up the score in the first play of the quarter. Emma Weltz lead the way for the Gaels in the second quarter as she scored five points, collected two rebounds and an assist. With a solid defensive strategy, the Gaels continued to extend their lead and held the Ravens to only 16 points in the quarter as Queen's led 44-37 at halftime.
The Raven's closed the gap to just two points until they eventually tied the score late in the quarter. The third quarter saw low scores from both sides of the court as the Gaels only scored eight points and Carleton just scored 15 points. As they headed into the fourth quarter the score was all tied up at 52.
Sophie de Goede, who scored 15 points and collected 11 rebounds in the game, made a crucial three-pointer that once again put the Gaels in the lead. The fourth quarter was highly competitive as both teams went shot for shot which kept the Ravens within two of the Gaels. In the final minute of the quarter, Ravens forward Alyssa Cerino leveled the score with free throws, 72-72, forcing the game into overtime.
Emma Ritcey led the way for the Gaels scoring 21 points, nine rebounds, and an assist. She got the Gaels off to a hot start in overtime when with an early three and from there the Gaels went on a run and put the game out of reach earning an 80-75 victory over Carleton
