KINGSTON, Ont. (January 11, 2020) - The No. 7 nationally-ranked Queen's Women's Basketball team (8-4) defeated the Algoma Thunderbirds (2-10) 84-34 on Saturday night at the ARC - Main Gym.

Algoma did its best to stay competitive in the first quarter but with four turnovers in the first two minutes of play, they were unable to kickstart any offence. The Thunderbirds Dionne Martin eventually scored their first points but the Gaels quickly followed up.
Emma Weltz led the quarter for the Gaels scoring 11 of her total 13 points on the night. Queen's would dominate for the remainder of the frame to finish with a 12 point lead up 21-9.
The Gaels continued to play well offensively in the 2nd quarter, putting up 24 points on Algoma. The Thunderbirds could not keep up, as they could only score seven points in the frame. Leading the way for the Gaels in the first half were
Sophie de Goede with six rebounds and
Emma Weltz with 13 points. After two quarters of play, the Gaels held a commanding 45-16 lead.
Megan Saftich opened up the second half with a drive that resulted in points on the scoreboard. The Thunderbirds ran into foul trouble, with eight fouls, which Queen's capitalized on. The Gaels completely dominated the Thunderbirds on the boards, outrebounding Algoma 36-18. Going into the fourth quarter Queen's maintained their lead with 63 points to the Thunderbirds 27.
The Gaels cruised through the fourth quarter, comfortably maintaining and extending their lead. The Queen's bench contributed 42 points, making this win a team effort. Overall, the Gaels were led by double-double performances from both
Julia Chadwick with 15 points, 11 rebounds and
Sophie de Goede with 15 points, 10 rebounds. The night ended with the Gaels walking away with an 84-34 victory.
