Gray drops 40 on Algoma joining Faulkner and Smart as only Queen’s players to hit 40 mark

KINGSTON, Ont. (January 11, 2020) – The Queen's Gaels (8-4) defeated the Algoma Thunderbirds (2-10) 89-62 on Saturday night at the ARC – Main Gym behind a 40 point effort from Quinton Gray

HONOURING FALL CHAMPIONS GAME FLOW
Gray jump-started the Gaels offence, successfully shooting for three on the first play of the game. The remainder of the quarter saw fast-paced and physical play from both teams as the Thunderbirds went six for 14 and the Gaels seven for 18 from the field. Algoma's Nicholas Gehlen stood out after he scored 11 of the Thunderbirds 19 points in the quarter. The first 10 minutes of play left the Gaels within two points of the Thunderbirds with a score of 19-17.  

The second quarter was just as tightly contested as the first. The Gaels and Thunderbirds traded the lead in the middle of the quarter, with each team having capitalized on their offensive opportunities. Gray was the Gaels largest contributor in the second quarter with 22 points, two rebounds and one assist. The Gaels were able to break away towards the end of the quarter, moving into half time with a lead of 45-29. 

Queen's continued to hold a steady advantage in the third quarter but were unable to put the game fully out of reach. Both teams played physically, but Quinton Gray was able to hit the 30 point mark with a shot from the 3-point range. Queen's was able to maintain a 20 point lead moving into the final frame. The third quarter finished with a score of 66-44 for the Gaels. 

The fourth quarter saw the Gaels utilize the full extent of their bench rotation, who contributed 19 points to their win. Leading the way for their bench was Landon Brickenden who scored six points on the night. Cole Syllas buried the Thunderbirds after a steal that resulted in a dunk, contributing to the Gaels 20 overall steals. Queen's outshot Algoma 54.7% to 41.4% which led them to end the game with a 27 point lead. Gray led the Gaels with 40 points. The game finished with the Thunderbirds falling to the Gaels 89-62.

Head coach Stephan Barrie spoke about the key to the Gaels win - "We were not playing hard enough on defence so after our timeout near the end of the first quarter that is what we really stressed."
