Gaels come from behind to defeat the Nipissing Lakers 2-1 to remain undefeated this season

KINGSTON (September 28th, 2019) – The Queen's Gaels (6-0-2) defeated the Nipissing Lakers (4-3) 2-1 at Richardson Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

GAME FLOW

The Gaels goal leader Cecila Way dominated possession for much of the first half for Queen's. Way consistently maneuvered down the field against the Lakers defenders and launched several shots on goal. The scoring chances pilled up for the Gaels in the first half, including two empty net misses by Jenny Matsukubo.

The score remained 0-0 until the 29th minute when Nipissing scored the first goal of the match. The lead didn't last long however as Queen's answered back in the 37th minute of the first half, as Alexandra Doane scored her first goal of the season from an assist by Taylor Green, who currently leads the OUA with six assists.

The first half closed with multiple saves made by Queen's goalkeeper Alanna Richardson, as the Lakers attempted to gain control of the game with a goal.

The match didn't remain tied for long as Christie Gray scored the game-winning-goal in the 62nd minute. The Gaels defense contained Nipissing attack for the final minutes of the match to secure the victory for Queen's.

JUNIOR GAELS/EQUALITY DAY

The Junior Gaels were on hand at today's match participating in games, activities, and played soccer on the field at halftime, not to mention cheering on the Gaels soccer team to their victory.

In addition to Junior Gaels Day, Saturday also marked #EqualGame Day. The #EqualGame campaign was created under UEFA's Respect initiative and designed to spread the positive spirit of inclusion, amplify a clear and uplifting message about the benefits that football brings to the community; show how the game can be enriched by greater diversity; and explain the European football family's role to make the sport open and accessible to all.

BY THE NUMBERS

8 – The Gaels have not lost a game through their first eight games of the season.
4 – Second in shots and assist for Queen's, Christie Gray scored her fourth goal of the season.
