KINGSTON (September 28th, 2019) – The Queen's Gaels (2-5-1) earned a dominant 2-1 victory over the Nipissing Lakers (2-4-1) for their second win of the season.
GAME FLOW
Entering the match both the Nipissing Lakers and Queen's Gaels combined for a total of three wins through the first seven weeks of the season. The Gaels have steadily improved, amassing 1-1-1 record in their last three games after starting the season 0-4.
The Gaels opened the match on the attack and traded early chances with the Lakers. Queen's forward Matthew Reale opened the scoring in the 31st minute on a play assisted by captain Michael Chang.
Three minutes later, Nipissing goalkeeper Andrew Johnstone was a ejected from the game, after he earned a red card for handling the ball outside of the box. The incident shifted the momentum of the match, as the Lakers were forced to play with 10-men for the remainder of the contest
Harry Clarke scored in the 71st minute to provide the Gaels with a 2-0 lead.
Nipissing responded with a goal of their own in the 78th minute with hopes to spark a comeback, however their attempt would be cut short as the Gaels held on to secure their second victory of the season.
JUNIOR GAELS/EQUALITY DAY
The Junior Gaels were on hand at today's match participating in games, activities, and played soccer on the field at halftime, not to mention cheering on the Gaels soccer team to their victory.
In addition to Junior Gaels Day, Saturday also marked #EqualGame Day. The #EqualGame campaign was created under UEFA's Respect initiative and designed to spread the positive spirit of inclusion, amplify a clear and uplifting message about the benefits that football brings to the community; show how the game can be enriched by greater diversity; and explain the European football family's role to make the sport open and accessible to all.
