No.3 Gaels get statement win over No.4 Guelph 54-19 snapping nine-game losing streak to Gryphons

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (September 14, 2019) – The No.3 Queen's Gaels (3-0) went into Guelph and took down the No.4 Gryphons (1-1) 54-19 in a battle between two of Canada's elite programs.

LONG-TIME COMING
The win for the Gaels marked their first regular-season/playoff victory over Guelph since the 2013 season when the Gaels went into Guelph to win the OUA championship. Since that game, Guelph had won nine straight matches against the Tricolour.

GAME FLOW
The home team Guelph was quick to jump out in front in the match as a try was put down five minutes in with a successful conversion. The Gaels fired back offensively with a pair of tries coming at 19 minutes (Carmen Izyk) and 25 minutes (Rachel Hickson). After de Goede connected on the conversion for the Hickson try she got a chance for a penalty goal at 29 minutes which was successful to put Queen's ahead 15-7.

Jaden Walker put the Gaels lead to 22-7 with a try in the 38th minute and Queen's was in control at the half.

In the second half, Izyk put down a quick score for the Gaels at the 43rd-minute mark with a successful Sophie de Goede conversion. The Gryphons were able to respond with a pair of tries at 47 and 53 minutes but only one conversion keeping the Queen's lead at 29-19.

From there de Goede notched her first try of the match and was soon followed by a McKinley Hunt try. The Gaels closed out the victory by a final score of 54-19.

CLUTCH KICKS AND CLIMBING THE ALL-TIME RECORDS
Gaels No.8 Sophie de Goede hit three penalty kicks in the match and was successful on five conversions. She also added a try for a 24 point afternoon. With her 24 points this weekend, de Goede passed Andrea Wadsworth for third on the Gaels all-time list and now sits in third with 152 just three points off of second place Nadia Popov and 67 off of the all-time record set by Lauren McEwen.

PIVOTAL POSITIONING
With the Gaels win over Guelph, they now sit in control of the OUA Shiels division at 3-0 with a matchup at Brock remaining on the season. Most importantly Queen's will hold home-field advantage throughout the OUA playoffs should they defeat Brock next weekend. They would also be in line to host the OUA championship should they qualify.

9 - Game Guelph winning streak snapped over Queen's
24 - Points for de Goede in the match
72 - Points this season for de Goede to lead the OUA
6 - Different Gaels scored tries on the afternoon
