After playing for the OUA Championship in 2018, the Queen's Gaels women's rugby team are at full strength and motivated to compete once again for not only an OUA banner but the U SPORTS championship this season.Â
McKinley Hunt returns from injury and Taylor Black will make her Gaels debut as they join defending U SPORTS MVP Sophie de Goede for the regular-season opener at home on September 8 at 1 pm against Western at Nixon Field.Â
Hunt is returning from a torn ACL she suffered prior to the start of the 2018 season. She was an impact player for the Gaels earning 2016 and 2017 U SPORTS All-Canadian honours and was the Gaels Outstanding Performer of the Year in 2017-18.Â
Coming off an OUA and U SPORTS MVP campaign, de Goede returns for her third season with the Gaels looking to help lead the Tricolour to their first OUA banner since 2013.Â
The trio of Gaels also represented Canada this offseason at the 2019 Women's Rugby Super Series in San Diego.Â
Last season, the Gaels posted a stellar 4-1 record in the Shiels Division but fell in the OUA Championship 39-14 to the undefeated Guelph Gryphons. The Gaels also competed at the 2018 U SPORTS National Championship in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, but lost 42-21 to St. Francis Xavier X-Women in the quarter-final.Â
Head coach Dan Valley will look to continue to lead the team to success in 2019. The Gaels have played in the OUA Championship and earned a U SPORTS National Championship berth in each of his first two seasons at Queen's.Â
Quote from Head Coach: "We're bringing back a very experienced squad from last year and we're bringing in first-year athletes that have played at a very high clip and are very talented athletes. I couldn't be any happier for where we're at, great scrimmages against Ottawa and Laval, a really nice exhibition fixture against Carleton, so we're trending in a really nice spot coming into Monday against Western."
