The Queen's Gaels women's soccer team opens the 2019 season at home on Saturday, August 31st against the Ryerson Rams. The Gaels finished second in the OUA East Division in 2018 and had a strong playoff run before finishing fourth at the OUA Championships.

After a tough playoff overtime loss to the Western Mustangs to open the OUA Final Four prevented the Gaels from playing for the OUA Championship last season, Queen's was battled a tough McMaster side in the bronze medal game and finished fourth.

For the Gaels to build off last season's success, head coach Dave McDowell will look to his young nucleus of talented forwards to find the back of the net, following the departure of star striker and 2018 OUA East Division MVP Jenny Wolever.

Wolever played an integral part for the Gaels last season. She tallied 13 goals, the second-highest mark in the OUA, one behind McMaster's Stephanie Roberts and seven more than Gaels teammate Christie Gray, who held the second-highest mark for the Gaels in 2018.

Despite Wolever's absence, the team has a talented young group who will have plenty of opportunities to find the back of the net. Gray and Alexandra Doane, are two key returning third-year forwards, alongside veteran midfielder Lidia Bradau.

The Gaels defence boasts a youthful presence, in particular following the graduation of fifth-year defender Alicia Levy. 2018 OUA second-team All-Star Jamie Foot, fourth-year Erin Cliffe, and Sarah Whelan will lead the team's young group.

Head coach Dave McDowell returns for his 32nd season at the helm of the women's program. McDowell has led the program in dominant fashion, earning a playoff berth every season and never accumulating more than four losses in a regular season. McDowell coached Queen's to three national championships in 1988, 2010 and 2011.

Head Coach Quote: "Well I think it's a combination of last year's group and a pretty decent incoming class and were excited about how the two are going to combine. It looks like we'll start five first year players so we'll be quite young but with youth comes some excitement."
