OTTAWA (February 24, 2019) - The Queen's Gaels (4-1) went into Ottawa and defeated the Gee-Gees (3-2) 6-5 on Sunday night to advance to the Queen's Cup semifinal and OUA East final.
GAME FLOW
The goals came fast and furious for the Tricolour in the opening frame, first, a harmless shot from the side boards by
Slater Doggett put the Gaels up 1-0 at 7:21.
Then at 14:46
Jared Bethune,
Nevin Guy and
Eric Margo broke in on a three-on-two opportunity, a shot from Guy bounced to a wide-open Bethune who fired the shot into the empty net with Gee-Gees goaltender Graham Hunt sprawled to his right on the ground.
Just over a minute later, Doggett picked up his second of the game on a great individual effort.
Graeme Brown fired a stretch pass three-quarter the length of the ice to Doggett who broke down the left wing one-on-one with a Gee-Gees defender. Doggett was able to push towards the inside of the ice and lift the puck above the glove of Hunt into the top corner to make it 3-0. Hunt was then chased for Anthony Brodeur in the Ottawa net.
If the first period was all Gaels, the second was all Gee-Gees as they solved Queen's netminder
Justin Fazio. First, it was Brendan Jacome at 15:17 to cut the Gaels lead down to 3-1. Then, on a late power-play, Eric Locke scored to make it a one-goal game after 40 minutes.
Just one minute into the third Locke struck again with his second of the game to tie things at 3-3 sending the home fans into a frenzy. Just a few minutes later a panel of glass broke after a stick shattered the panel. After a short delay, both teams entered a 2:40 stretch of pure mayhem.
First
Mason Kohn scored to put Queen's ahead at 8:36, just a minute and 10 seconds later Ottawa's Michael Poirier tied the game at 4-4. 22 seconds after that, Bethune was on the receiving end of a long stretch pass from
Spencer Abraham that
Graeme Brown touched at centre ice. Bethune broke in on the net and fired a shot above Brodeur's blocker to put the Gaels on top 5-4. After a Gee-Gee penalty, Bethune scored his third of the night only 51 seconds after his second. Off the ensuing face-off, Ottawa got back to within one 17 seconds after Bethune's third with a goal from Jacob Sweeney.
After the dust settled the Gaels clamped down defensively and hung on to win 6-5.
