Epee team takes silver, Gaels coach Rodney Carter named coach of the year at OUA men's fencing championship

20678The Queen's Gaels finished with a fifth place overall finish as the 2019 OUA men's fencing championship wrapped up on Sunday evening (Feb. 10) at the University of Toronto's Athletic Centre Field House.

The Varsity Blues finished with 252 points, ahead of the Carleton Ravens (250) and bronze medalist RMC Paladins (214).  

Ottawa's Patrick Fournier was awarded the George Tully Trophy, presented to the male fencer most proficient in skill, style and sportsmanship as judged by a panel of judges, while Rodney Carter of the Queen's Gaels earned OUA coach of the year honours.

TEAM RELAYS: The Queen's Gaels squad of Gavin Crowder, Matthew Litwin, Rory McEwen and Spencer McGregor banded together to finish with an OUA silver medal in the Epee team relay event. The Gaels lost out on the gold to the host Toronto Varsity Blues.

INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION: In individual competition on day one, a pair of Gaels finished just outside the top three positions in the Epee. Queen's fencers Matthew Litwin and Spencer McGregor placed fourth and fifth respectively in the competition.
