DeBruin scores lone goal as Gaels fall to Gryphons

GUELPH, Ont. (January 27, 2019) – The Queen's Gaels (11-8-0) fell to the Guelph Gryphons (14-2-1) by a score of 4-1 in Sunday afternoon OUA Women's hockey action.

GAME FLOW
Following a postponed matchup with the York Lions on Saturday, The Gaels traveled to Guelph Sunday to take on the OUA leading Gryphons. The Gryphons entered the matchup having one four straight games and with a record of 8-2 in their last ten.

At 17:54 of the first period, the Gryphons opened the scoring on the powerplay as Nicole McKinnon buried a rolling puck through the legs of Stephanie Pascal on a rebound chance. Guelph out-shot the Gaels 6 to 9 in the first period and led after twenty minutes by a score of 1 to 0.

In the second period, The Gryphons doubled their advantage, scoring once again on the powerplay as Karli Shell netted her 6thof the season at 16:30. The Gryphons once again out-shot the visiting Gaels, this time doubling them 12 to 6 as Guelph took a two-goal lead to the final frame.

In the third and final period, the Gaels finally got themselves on the board as Caroline DeBruin scored her 5thof the season on the powerplay. The former Cornell standout was in the right place at the right time to corral a rebound chance and tuck it into a nearly empty Gryphons net.

Despite putting heavy pressure on the Gryphons for most of the period, the Gaels were unable to score again. The Gryphons would put the game further out of reach at 12:58 of the 3rdwith Katlin Lowry's 13thof the season, making her the second leading scorer in the OUA.

As time wore down, the Gryphons added a fourth goal on the empty Gaels net through Sydney Davidson, and the game ended with a 4 to 1 victory for OUA leading Guelph, their 5thin a row.

The Gaels out-shot the Gryphons 20 to 5 in the final period and bested the Gryphons in total shots by a count of 32 to 26, yet it was to no avail, as Gryphons netminder Valerie Lamenta demonstrated why she has the best goals against average in the OUA with thirty-one stops. Meanwhile, the Gryphons timely and clinical scoring was simply too much for the Gaels to overcome
