Gaels put up 95 points in win on Kingston Impact night

KINGSTON, Ont. (January 25th, 2019) – The Queen's Women's Basketball Team (10-7) defeated the Nipissing Lakers (3-14) 95-69 on Friday night at the ARC Main Gym.

KINGSTON IMPACT NIGHT ALARIE FOUR AWAY FROM 1,000
The Gaels leading scorer Marianne Alarie finished with 18 points on the night and is now just four points away from hitting 1,000 in her career.

GAME FLOW
It was all Gaels in the opening quarter, as the home team quickly opened up a 10 point lead on the Lakers through strong rebounding and ball movement: registering 14 rebounds and nine assists in the quarter as a team. The Gaels headed to the second quarter with a 25-13 lead.

In a tightly contested second quarter, the Lakers up-tempo approach got the best of the Gaels early on - as they managed to close the lead to within six points. The Gaels would respond late in the quarter, however, forcing several key turnovers with their tight defensive pressure and establishing a fourteen-point advantage at 46-32 headed to the half.

Leading the way for the Gaels in the first half was Maddie Morris with 12 points and seven rebounds. Despite having very similar shooting percentages to the Lakers in the opening half, the Gaels found their advantage on the glass, outrebounding the visiting Lakers by a margin of 32-14.

In an impressive third quarter, the Gaels added another 10 points to their lead and shot very efficiently from the field (56%), with one series of play leading to back to back made three-pointers from Gales forward Myriam Fontaine. The Gaels took a 72-48 lead into the fourth and final quarter.

The Gaels finished strong in the final quarter, winning the final frame 19 to 14 and cruising away to a 95-69 win, the Gaels' 10th of the season. Leading the way for the Gaels statistically was Veronika Lavergne with 21 points while Maddie Morris led the Gaels with nine rebounds. The Gaels scored 24 points off Lakers turnovers and outrebounded the visitors 52-23.

FINAL SAY
Head Coach Dave Wilson spoke after the game about what made his team so successful offensively: "We felt like we played some good basketball last weekend against Ottawa, so it was just a matter of finding our confidence again - which is easier said than done. We found our groove offensively tonight though, especially through our ball movement, with 29 assists on 39 made shots".
