KINGSTON, Ont. (January 18, 2019) – The Queen's Gaels (10-7-0-0) picked up an important 5-2 win on Friday night as they downed the No.6 Western Mustangs (10-3-0-4).
The win propelled the Gaels from the eighth in the standings to the fifth position with just seven games remaining in the season.
GAME FLOW
The Gaels were outshot 8-4 in the opening period but were the first to capitalize as
Alex Maw scored her first goal of the season.
After receiving the puck at centre ice, Maw burst into the zone and tucked the puck past Western's Carmen Lasis to open the scoring.
The hot hand continued into the second period as the Gaels scored three consecutive goals to build their lead to 4-0.
First,
Caroline DeBruin netted her fourth of the season as she potted a loose puck into an open net.
Hannah De Coutere put a shot on net from the point,
Hailey Wilson grabbed the rebound and sent a backhand shot that rolled out to DeBruin for the goal.
Moments later,
Katrina Manoukarakis scored her team leading seventh goal of the season as she sent a wrister to the top left corner.
Taylor Hicks capped off the Gaels scoring in the second period as she intercepted a Western pass in the offensive zone and fired a shot past Lasis. The Gaels scored their four goals on just 13 shots through two periods.
The Mustangs responded with 36 seconds remaining in the period as Claire Balas cut their deficit to 4-1 heading into the second intermission.
Katrina Manoukarakis tallied her second goal of the game as she capitalized on a centering pass from
Taylor Hicks. She moved from her forehand to her backhand to get Lasis out of position, then slid the puck into the empty net.
The Gaels would control the remainder of the game keeping the Mustangs off the scoreboard until the final minute where Western tacked on a garbage time goal.

The Gaels are back in action tomorrow night as they welcome the Windsor Lancers (0-13-2-1) to the Memorial Centre.
Earlier this season, the Gaels picked up a 4-1 win over the Lancers in Windsor and will look for a repeat performance as they close out the two-game home stand.
