KINGSTON, Ont. (January 12, 2019) – The Queen's Gaels (9-5) defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues (3-11) 87-38 on Saturday night at the ARC Main Gym on the annual Shoot for the Cure night. 
 
SHOOT FOR THE CURE
It was the annual Shoot for the Cure night, a U SPORTS Women's Basketball fundraising initiative to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) - and other related local and provincial charities - which ran for a 12^th straight year. To make a donation visit gogaelsgo.com/shootforthecure.

GAME FLOW
The Gaels got off to a good start in the first quarter, utilizing a zone defensive strategy and taking advantage of the size mismatch on the offensive end. Veronika Lavergne led the Gaels with eight points and four rebounds en route to a 16-8 lead over the Varsity Blues.
 
It was more of the same for the Gaels in the second quarter, as they were clinical at both ends of the floor, this time putting up 24 points while surrendering only seven.  Additionally, the Gaels more than doubled the Varsity Blues rebounding totals in first half (27-15), while creating 10 steals. Laura Donovan led Queen's in the half with 11 points, as the Gaels took a 40-15 lead to the halftime break.
 
The Gaels cruised in the second half, stretching out their comfortable lead even further and receiving a balanced scoring effort throughout the lineup, with 10 players recording at least six points. The Gaels walked away with an 87-38 win, their ninth of the season. The Gaels were led by first-year guard Donovan with 15 points (a career high) while Sophie de Goede was formidable on the boards with 13 rebounds and finished with a double-double after scoring 10.
 
FINAL SAY
Head Coach Dave Wilson spoke about his team's strong defensive effort: "I thought we were very effective tonight helping each other at the defensive end. Most of the time when we created turnovers, multiple players were responsible for creating the play."
