OTTAWA, Ont. (January 18, 2019) – The Queen's Women's Basketball Team (9-6) fell to the Carleton Ravens (12-3) 60-52 on Friday night at the Raven's Nest.
GAME FLOW
The Ravens got off to a hot start, as the home team opened up a 10-point lead at 14-4 just past the mid-way point of the first quarter on the strength of 7-10 shooting from the field. The Gaels would fail to score again in the quarter, as the Raven's No.1 ranked defence in the OUA shut down the visitors, holding them to just 2-9 shooting and 0-4 from three in the quarter. Entering the second quarter, the Gaels trailed Carleton 20-4.
Queen's responded well in the second, but the Ravens were able to maintain their 16-point lead with the score at 36-20 headed to the half. Leading the way for the Gaels in the first half was
Veronika Lavergne with eight points and four rebounds, while Nicole Gilmore led the Ravens with nine points.
While the Ravens would stretch the lead out to as many as 20 points in the third quarter, the Gaels would go on an explosive late-quarter run, making five straight shots and cutting the lead back down to 10 as the Gaels headed to the 4th quarter trailing the Ravens just 48 to 38.
The Gaels continued to pile on the pressure early in the 4th, as the visitors cut the lead down to just five points with a little less than seven minutes left to play. Later on, after two converted free throws from
Sophie de Goede and a subsequent post shot from
Veronika Lavergne, the Gaels managed to reduce the Ravens advantage to only three points with precisely two minutes left to play. The Ravens would respond almost immediately, however, as Cynthia Dupont drained a long-range 3-pointer on the ensuing possession, re-extending the lead to six points. Dupont's shot would prove to be the dagger as the Gaels were unable to close the gap any further and the Ravens would walk away with a 60-52 victory.
Leading the way for the Gaels in scoring was
Sophie de Goede with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Cynthia Dupont led the Ravens in scoring with 18 points. It was a turnover-ridden affair for both sides, as the teams totalled 40 combined turnovers, the Gaels were also fouled by the Ravens 21 times.
