NORTH BAY, Ont. (January 12, 2019) – The No.7 Queen's Gaels (15-5-0) defeated the Nipissing Lakers (6-13-0) 4-1 to secure a berth in the OUA Playoffs. After two gritty periods the Gaels were able to pull away in the third and ensured that their season will continue in February.
GAME FLOW
The Gaels had control of the opening period, as they were able to work the puck around in the offensive zone. They were handed three powerplay opportunities, however Domenic Graham stopped all eight shots he faced to keep the Gaels off the scoreboard heading into the first intermission.
The first goal of the game came in the second period courtesy of the Lakers' Brock Morrison. He was the recipient of a centering pass and was all-alone against Gaels' goaltender
Jack Flinn.
Later in the period,
Slater Doggett continued his hot streak as he went coast-to-coast tying the game up at 1-1. Doggett was able to enter the zone and send a wrister that squeaked by Graham. The score would remain 1-1 heading into the second intermission.
The Gaels were tested early in the third as Lakers' captain Erik Robichaud had a breakaway opportunity. However,
Jack Flinn made a tough blocker save to keep the score tied.
The offence was sure to reward Flinn for his key save as they quickly added two goals en route to the victory.
First,
Slater Doggett found the rebound off a
Nevin Guy slapshot and found the open net for his second goal of the game. Moments later,
Luke Edwards kept on the 2-on-1 and fired a shot past Graham to bring the Gaels lead to 3-1.
On a late powerplay,
Graeme Brown scored on a lengthy shot from the point to put the nail in the coffin and secure the Gaels' victory.
