Gaels finish UQAM Tournament 2-1

MONTREAL - The Gaels are in Montreal for the UQAM invitational tournament. The Gaels will be taking on UQAM, Cape Breton and Brandon throughout the weekend.

FRIDAY
The Gaels hit the hard-court for the first time since arriving back from their Puerto Rico trip and challenged the Cape Breton Capers on Friday night.

The Gaels opened up with a strong opening quarter jumping ahead to an 18-11 lead after the first. In the second, Cape Breton flipped the switch on the Gaels to tie the game up at halftime.

The Capers kept their momentum going into the third quarter and soon found themselves comfortably ahead of Queen's. For the Gaels, Maddie Morris had a stellar night finishing with 18 points and three rebounds.

Queen's dropped the opening game 77-67.

SATURDAY
After a loss on Friday, the Gaels bounced back for an 83-57 win over the Brandon Bobcats.

Both traded baskets throughout the first quarter however the Gaels took control of the game in the second quarter outscoring the Bobcats 24-11 in the frame.

The Gaels kept the momentum rolling into the second half as they outscored the Bobcats by a large margin again 28-13.

Veronika Lavergne had a strong game off the bench with a game-high 18 points. Most of which came off of 10-10 free throw shooting.

The Gaels will wrap up the weekend against the host UQAM Citadins tomorrow afternoon at 12 pm. 

SUNDAY
Queen's made it two straight wins to close out the UQAM Invitational tournament as the Gaels defeated the host Citadins 71-61 on Sunday afternoon in Montreal.

Myriam Fontaine had a team-high 15 points for the Gaels and added eight rebounds while shooting 7-11 from the floor. Maddie Morris (11) and Michelle Istead (10) also hit the double-digit mark in points while the Citadins Veronique Boivin had a game-high 20 points.

Queen's went into halftime up five and produced a strong third quarter doubling up UQAM 24-12 to take a 17 point lead into the final frame.

The Gaels closed the door from there and leave Montreal with a 2-1 record.

Next up for the Gaels is the Queen's Invitational Tournament where the Gaels will take on Alberta to kick things off on October 12.
