KINGSTON, Ont. (September 2, 2018) – The Queen's women's soccer team capped off a perfect opening weekend with a 4-1 win against the Laurentian Voyageurs at Miklas-McCarney Field.
GAME FLOW
As fans were still entering the stands the Gaels jumped out to a quick lead. In the 3rd minute
Jenny Wolever fed a perfectly placed pass right to
Christie Gray for a tap-in goal.
Then just three minutes later, Wolever was taken down in the box setting up a penalty-kick goal for
Taylor Green.
There wasn't any more scoring until the very end of the half. The Voyageurs found their lone goal of the game thanks to a beautifully placed cross to Brianne Rodrigue who then headed it to a wide-open Megan Chiovitti for the goal.
However, the Gaels made sure it wasn't the Voyageurs who took the momentum into the locker room as in extra time
Frederique Poitras connected for her first goal as a Gael.
Queen's played the second half very slow and conservative. Chances were limited on both sides as the Gaels were content to hold on to their 3-1 lead.
In extra time, the Gaels countered an aggressive Voyageur's attack with an opportunity of their own.
Jamie Foot found herself some space and found the bottom left corner to seal the game.
TEAM PLAY
Unlike the season opening game against Nipissing, which was heavily dominated by
Jenny Wolever, Queen's utilized their depth on Sunday afternoon.
Seven different Gaels recorded a shot on goal improving the team's all-around performance.
BY THE NUMBERS
15 - The Gaels put 15 shots on goal, compared to Laurentian's four in total.
11 - Voyageur's goalkeeper Caitlin McNamara had a busy afternoon making 11 saves.
3 - Three assists for Queen's that resulted in wide-open scoring opportunities.
FINAL SAY
"It's not always going to be pretty and it's not always going to be about scoring six, seven, or eight goals over a weekend. In the end it's about getting three points," said head coach
Dave McDowell. "We're very ecstatic to get six points to start the year."
UP NEXT
The Gaels will be on the road next weekend. On Friday, Sept. 7 they'll travel to Oshawa to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks. Then on Sunday, Sept. 9 they'll face the Trent Excalibur in Peterborough.
