KINGSTON, Ont. - The Queen's Gaels enter the OUA playoffs as the No.9 ranked team in the nation and second seed in the OUA East. The Gaels will take on the seventh-seeded Nipissing Lakers in the opening round of the OUA playoffs.
Game one goes Wednesday night at 7 pm in Nipissing while game two is back in Kingston on Friday night at 7:30 pm at the Memorial Centre. Should the series go the distance, game three will be Saturday night in Kingston. All games can be seen live on OUA.tv and tickets for the Gaels home games are available at gogaelsgo.com/tickets.
The two teams met three times in the regular season with the Gaels winning all three matchups, including the regular season finale by a 5-0 score last Saturday night in Kingston.
The 5-0 win gave the Gaels their 19th win of the season which established a new program record for wins in a season. The Gaels finished with 90 goals for and 67 against compared to 67 goals for by Nipissing who allowed 93 against.
FORWARDS
Up front, Queen's is led by
Slater Doggett who finished with 33 points in 28 games for the Gaels.
Darcy Greenaway found the back of the net 14 times for the Gaels during the season and finished tied with
Eric Ming for 24 points.
Ryan Bloom tallied nine goals and 14 assists for the Gaels while
Luke Edwards has been one of the hottest players for Queen's of late having scored five of his eight goals in the last seven games of the season. He finished the year having registered a point in seven straight games before being held scoreless against Nipissing last Saturday.
Dan Desrochers led Nipissing in scoring with nine goals and nine assists on the year. The team lead in goals was 10 off the stick of Brett Hargrave. Half of his goals came on the man-advantage for the Lakers.
DEFENCE
Gaels captain
Spencer Abraham led the way offensively from the back end tallying four goals and 22 assists for the Gaels. Former Kingston Frontenac
Warren Steele finished with 19 points, and first-year defenceman
Patrick Sanvido drew into the lineup for all 28 games holding down a strong defensive game.
Nipissing rookie Matt Donnelly was a standout all season on the blue line for the Lakers as he scored three goals and added 13 assists in 27 games for the North Bay squad.
GOALTENDING
A big part of the Queen's team is their combined defensive effort. That starts between the pipes where the duo of veteran
Kevin Bailie and
Jacob Brennan combined for the third-best goals against average in the OUA.
Bailie picked up 10 wins for the Gaels this season and climbed past 50 in his career with the Tricolour. He carries a 2.53 GAA, and 0.920 save percentage into the playoffs.
The Lakers saw 18 starts from Brent Moran who holds a3.41 GAA and 0.913 save percentage.Â
SPECIAL TEAMS
Queen's scored 21 powerplay goals this season ranking sixth in the OUA with a 20% efficiency, on the penalty kill they were the ninth-ranked team with an 82.4% margin.
Nipissing finished as the 13th ranked powerplay unit scoring 22 goals on the season. While on the penalty kill they finished with an 85% efficiency which ranked fourth best in the OUA.Â
