Strong rebounding leads Gaels over Gryphons in home opener

KINGSTON, Ont. (November 9th, 2018) – The Queen's Women's Basketball Team (3-1) defeated the Guelph Gryphons (3-2) 80 to 49 on Friday night in the Gaels home opener at the ARC – Main Gym.
 
GAME FLOW
The Gryphons jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead, but the Gaels would roar back thanks to some sharp three-point shooting, taking a 20 to 12 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Gaels shot 4-10 from three-point land and scored 12 points off turnovers in the 1st quarter. 
 
The Gaels extended their advantage in the 2nd with good offensive ball movement and their continued stifling defensive play, allowing only 12 points and holding Guelph without a three-pointer. At the half, the Gaels held a commanding 40 to 24 lead. 
 
The Gaels were led in the 1st half by Marianne Alarie with 16 points and Maddie Morris with seven rebounds. At the half, the Gaels were outrebounding the Gryphons 29 to 16. 
 
In the 3rd quarter, The Gaels consolidated their advantage, getting the lead up to as many as 25 points and ending the quarter up 63 to 41.
 
It was all Gaels in the 4th quarter, as they held the Gryphons to only 8 points and extended their lead by 9, making the final score 80 to 49 in favour of the Gaels. 
 
The Gaels completely dominated the Gryphons on the boards, outrebounding Guelph 57 to 33. The Gaels also accumulated 29 bench points, led by first-year Natalie Froese, who had nine points five rebounds and two assists. 
 
Overall, the Gaels were led by Marianne Alarie with 22 points and Maddie Morris with 13 rebounds.

22– The Gaels had twenty-two assists in comparison to Guelph's eight. 
 
FINAL SAY
Head coach Dave Wilson shared his thoughts: "I was very pleased with how we played the majority of the game…we rebounded very well, Guelph came in with very positive rebound statistics, so we wanted to prevent them from getting second chances, and we did a good job of that."
