Gaels stout defending key in 74-37 victory over Algoma

KINGSTON, Ont. (November 10, 2018) – The Queen's Women's Basketball Team (4-1) defeated the Algoma Thunderbirds (0-6) 74-37 on Saturday night at the ARC – Main Gym.

GAME FLOW
Algoma did its best to make the first quarter a grinding, low-scoring affair as both teams struggled to shoot the ball efficiently early on. Queen's would break away late in the quarter however, jumping out to a 10-point lead and leaving the opening frame up 22-12.

The Gaels continued to pour on the scoring in the 2nd quarter, putting up 25 points on Algoma. The visitors struggled to stay in the game, scoring only 7 points and receiving a limited contribution from their short bench rotation. At the half, The Gaels led Algoma 47-19. Leading the way for the Gaels in the first half were Marianne Alarie with 13 points and Maddie Morris with 5 rebounds.

The Gaels cruised in the second half, comfortably maintaining and extending their lead. Queen's held Algoma to only 18 second half points, walking away with a 74 to 37 victory, completing an undefeated home opening weekend. Overall, the Gaels were led by Marianne Alarie with 17 points and Emma Weltz with 13 points.

BY THE NUMBERS
38 - The Gaels forced thirty-eight Algoma turnovers.
37 – The Gaels bench contributed thirty-seven points.

FINAL SAY
Head coach Dave Wilson shared his thoughts: "At the beginning of the game we weren't pressuring defensively like we'd talked about. Once we fixed our defensive pressure, it helped us create lots of turnovers and take over the game."

UP NEXT
The Gaels face The Laurier Golden Hawks next Friday November, 16 for a school-day special start time at 11:00AM at the Arc Main Gym.
