GAME OF THE WEEK
Men's Hockey
The No.8 men's hockey team (11-3-0) will take on the No.7 Carleton Ravens (10-2-3) at the Memorial Centre on Friday at 7:30pm. Tickets are available at gogaelsgo.com/tickets or you can watch the game live on OUA.tv.
Â
The Gaels are currently on a five game winning streak, which includes back-to-back 7-2 victories over Nipissing and RMC. Their first opponent this weekend, Carleton, also find themselves on a five game winning streak, which includes two wins over Ottawa, as well as wins over UQTR and McGill.
Â
Part of the Ravens early success has come from the emergence of three first year forwards: Jacob Smith, Brogan O'Brien and Matthew Forchuk. The trio has added to an already deep Ravens' core which, like the Gaels, are looking to make a deep run in this year's Queen's Cup playoffs.
Â
In their last meeting in early November, the Gaels fell to the Ravens 6-3 in Ottawa. In that game, the Ravens chased
Justin Fazio out of the game with six goals within the first 26 minutes.
Â
The Gaels are hoping that home ice will lead to a better outcome against the Ravens. Queen's has won six straight games at the Memorial Centre while averaging over four goals per game during that stretch.
Â
Â
Then on Saturday night at 7:30pm, the Gaels will take on the No.5 Ottawa Gee-Gees (11-1-2) to wrap up what will be a massive weekend for the OUA East leaderboard. Tickets are available at gogaelsgo.com/tickets or you can watch the game live on OUA.tv.
Â
The Gee-Gees enter the weekend as the highest-ranked OUA team in the U SPORTS rankings much of which has to do with the incredible balance throughout their lineup.
Â
After what some would call a down year (25 points in 28 games), Gee-Gees' leading scorer Kevin Domingue is back to his elite form with 19 points in just 14 games. He bolsters a lethal top-line with Cody Drover (17 points) and Brendan Jacome (16 points).
Â
However, the Gaels have a lethal line of their own as they look to avenge their 4-2 loss to Ottawa earlier this season. The line of
Mason Kohn,
Duncan Campbell and
Luke Bertolucci have been leading the way for the Gaels, with
Mason Kohn in early contention for rookie of the year.
Â
You won't want to miss this weekend's action as the Gaels clash with two bitter rivals with OUA East positioning on the line heading into the December break.
Â
Women's Basketball
The women's basketball team (6-2) looks to get back in the win column as they take on the Brock Badgers (3-6) and No.5 McMaster Marauders (7-2) this weekend.
Â
The Gaels had their four game winning streak against a tough Lakehead Thunderwolves squad. They turned the ball over 29 times in that game, a statistic that the Gaels hope to reverse this weekend before they head into the first half break.
Â
On Friday, the Gaels head to St. Catharines to battle the Brock Badgers. You can watch this game live on OUA.tv at 6pm.
Â
The Badgers currently find themselves on a three game losing streak and haven't hit the 60-point mark in any of those losses. That bodes well for the Gaels who have the fifth-ranked defence in the province, allowing 60.1 points per game.
Â
The difference in Friday's matchup could come through the three-point shot. The Gaels rank second in the OUA, shooting 36.1% meanwhile the Badgers rank last at just 20.5%.
Â
Then on Saturday, the Gaels will head up to Hamilton to take on the McMaster Marauders. You can watch this game live on OUA.tv at 6pm.
Â
The Marauders are led by Hilary Hanaka (2017 First Team All-Star), Linnaea Harper (2017 Third Team All-Star) and Sarah Gates (2017 All-Rookie). The trio combine for over 43 points per game in a McMaster offence that averages over 74 points per game.
Â
What makes the Marauders a consistent threat is their work in the paint. They rank third in the OUA with 42.3 rebounds per game. Second chance opportunities are what makes McMaster such a force in the OUA West. The Gaels who haul in 39.9 rebounds per game, will look to have a physical presence in the paint and continue their efficient shooting in what should be a must-see matchup.
Â
Men's Basketball
The men's basketball team (5-3) will wrap up their first half of the season as they take on the Brock Badgers (5-4) and McMaster Marauders (4-5) in a pair of road games this weekend.
Â
Last weekend the Gaels traveled to Thunder Bay and pulled out a gritty win against the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Now, the Gaels will look to continue that road success as they head to Southern Ontario.
Â
The Gaels have won four of their last five games putting them right back into the thick of things in the OUA East. The emergence of
Quinton Gray as a bona fide primary scoring option has taken this Gaels offence to a new level.
Â
On Friday at 8pm, the Gaels will take on the Brock Badgers who are in the midst of a three game losing streak, all three losses coming against Ryerson, Carleton and Ottawa.
Â
The Badgers boast one of the premier offensive games in the province, clicking at 82.5 points per game. They've cracked the 100-point threshold three times this season against Guelph, Laurentian and Toronto and most recently put up 91 points against an Ottawa team that has the third-ranked defence in the OUA. The Gaels, who have the fourth-ranked defence in the OUA, will attempt to slow down this Brock offence led by Johneil Simpson who posts 20.7 points per game.
Â
On Saturday at 8pm, the Gaels take on the McMaster Marauders who enter the weekend with two wins in the month of November. Although they've had little issues on the offensive side of the ball, the Marauders have struggled defensively giving up 85.8 points per game (13
th in the OUA).
Â
The Marauders are not a team that will beat themselves as they give up the third fewest amount of turnovers per game. Their efficient offence and strong ball control will be an interesting matchup for the Gaels who are rely heavily on turnovers defensively (3
rd in the OUA in forced turnovers).
Â
You can watch both games live on OUA.tv throughout the weekend.
