KINGSTON, Ont. (November 16, 2018) - The Queen's Gaels (5-1) took down the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks (2-5) 86-74 during a special school day game that saw the teams tip-off at 11 am.
GAME FLOW
The visitors were able to mount an early lead scoring the first points of the game. Queen's chipped away thanks to
Marianne Alarie who knocked down a jump shot then followed up just 30 seconds later with her first three-pointer of the game to put the Gaels in front 8-6. Queen's closed the quarter with a 25-17 lead.
A 13-0 run to start the second quarter forced Laurier into a timeout to regroup. The Gaels outscored Laurier 29-20 in the frame behind a strong quarter from Lavergne who finished with six points and five rebounds in the frame.
The second half saw Laurier push back. The Golden Hawks came out firing and chipped away at the Queen's lead.
Queen's picked up their defensive play in the final frame and paced by some timely shooting from
Laura Donovan, who scored eight in the fourth, the Tricolour secured the win 86-74.
Alarie led all scorers with 24 points while Lavergne finished with a double-double scoring 18 and adding 10 rebounds.
Queen's rookie Donovan had a career-best 13 points in the win while the Golden Hawks were led by Jill Condron who posted 14 points and 10 rebounds.
SCHOOL DAY GAME
Despite heavy snow hitting the Kingston region overnight, many school children were in attendance for the school day game to cheer on the Gaels. The men's basketball team signed autographs at halftime of the women's game to some fans in attendance.
