KINGSTON, Ont. (October 7th, 2018) – The Queen's Women's Soccer Team (8-2-2) defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks (7-4-2) 2-0 Sunday at Richardson Stadium in OUA women's soccer action.
GAME FLOW
It was a tense first half with few chances for either side. In the 42nd minute, the Gaels were able to get on the board first, as two seniors combined on senior day with a goal scored by
Jenny Wolever assisted by
Sarah Nixon. The Gaels would take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
The Gaels continued to apply pressure with a great chance to start the second half from midfielder
Taylor Green, who was only thwarted by a terrific point-blank save from UOIT's Victoria Savage. The good pressure from the Gaels continued as they amassed four consecutive corners within three minutes (53rd to 55th minutes).
In the 80th minute,
Jenny Wolever found herself with a breakaway chance to double the advantage but was stopped by the UOIT keeper. Desperate to even the scoreline, UOIT threw more and more players forward as the clock approached the 90-minute mark. In extra time,
Jenny Wolever once again found herself alone on the break, this time, she was taken down by a UOIT defender, and a penalty kick was conceded. Wolever calmly converted from the spot, scoring her second goal of the match and putting the result out of reach for the Ridgebacks.
The final whistle would blow only moments later, and the Gaels would walk away with a 2-0 victory at fulltime, taking four of a possible six points available this weekend.
