KINGSTON, Ont. (October 19, 2018) – The Queen's Gaels (3-1-0) fell short against the Guelph Gryphons (1-3-0) by a score of 7-1 on Friday night in OUA men's hockey action.
GAME FLOW
After losing the first three games of the 2018-2019 campaign, Guelph was desperate to get off to a good start and it showed in their aggressive demeanor early on. The Gryphons took advantage on the first power-play of the night when left winger Cody Thompson scored on a rebound off the end boards making it 1-0.
The Gaels evened the score at 1-1 with inside a minute left in the first on a slap shot from defencemen
Graeme Brown, only his 3rd
goal in now his 3rd season with the Gaels. The goal gave the Gaels some renewed momentum after a first period which was largely dominated by the Gryphons, who outshot the Gaels 12-5.
The Gryphons restored the one-goal advantage early in the 2nd period on a wild play that saw the puck pinball off numerous Gaels players before finding its way past the goaltender and making it 2-1 Guelph. Only moments later, the Gryphons doubled their lead to make it 3-1. The Gryphons scored on a play directly in front of the net, bowling over the Gaels netminder
Jack Flinn in the process. Midway through the second period, the Gaels looked to close the gap on the powerplay but were robbed on a cross-crease chance by Gryphons goaltender Evan Cormier, who made a terrific desperation stick-save.
Just past the halfway mark of the 2
ndperiod, the Gaels received a major penalty for head contact on a hit laid by defencemen
Alex Row. This led to two Guelph goals on the ensuing 5-minute penalty kill, making the score 5-1 Gryphons headed to the final frame.
The Gryphons added two more goals in the third, to make the final score 7-1 Guelph.
This put an end to the Gales perfect record and gave Guelph their first win of the season.
