NORTH BAY, Ont. (October 14, 2018) – The Queen's men's soccer team (8-5-1) escaped North Bay with an important 1-0 win over the Nipissing Lakers (6-7-1).
The win gives the Gaels some breathing room heading into the final weekend of the season. Prior to the game, the Lakers were just three points behind the Gaels for the fourth seed in the OUA East. Now, the Gaels hold a six-point edge with just two games remaining.
GAME FLOW
The Gaels began the game with offensive possession of the ball as they threw multiple opportunities at the net. The best of these chances came in the 11
th minute as
Andrew Kim sent a chip pass to
Reynard Husin who sent a header right to Nipissing goalkeeper Andrew Johnstone.
Chances were limited on both sides as the teams headed into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
The beginning of the second half was a different story as the Gaels converted on an early opportunity.
Milosh Stojanovic intercepted a clearing attempt and sent a shot on goal. However, the shot was blocked by a Laker defender's arm and a penalty was called.
Kyle Owens stepped up for the penalty kick and scored to give the Gaels the 1-0 lead.
From there on it was all about securing the win, but Nipissing did have their chances. Gaels' goaltender
Alex Jones came up with a pair of key saves in the 72
nd and 75
th minute to keep his team in front.
Things got intense in the final ten minutes as fouls and yellow cards were exchanged for both sides. But eventually, the final whistle blew and the Gaels were victorious.

Alex Jones made four saves on Sunday to shutout the Lakers and pick up his fifth clean sheet of the season.
